POETRY OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

The future of artificial intelligence has become one of the most important issues of our time. Professors at the world's most important universities have different views on this issue, while philosophers are divided into two.

Man is indeed a very difficult being to understand. This incomprehensibility and unsolvability stem from the fact that the universe is based on uncertainty and that man is superior to most of the created beings. Whether it is more complicated to understand man as a species or as an individual is a question I still ask myself.

What does it mean to be an individual? What makes me who I am? Why do we constantly desire things and how do our desires manage to constantly change? What is the self? Where does our will to live come from? Who is the other in us and what is the so-called image? Furthermore, would we be us without our emotions? What is the soul and where is it? Do we have an identity or not? How unique can we be? These questions have always influenced my writing as a writer and poet.

But when it comes to artificial intelligence, many more questions come to mind. Can there be consciousness without emotions? Can artificial intelligence have a will? Where will qualias, which we can define as subjective conscious experiences of human beings, be in artificial intelligence? For example, can artificial intelligence feel pain? Can it understand other internal emotions brought by pain?

I don't believe it's entirely possible, because people have intuition, inspiration, hunches, some kind of connection from somewhere out of the world. At this point, will AI be familiar with events and situations or will it understand them? I think what will happen in the future is that AI will be an unconscious mind activity. In short, the thoughts caused by our brain, that is, thoughts that we don't even understand where they come from, will not be in artificial intelligence.

Humanity consists of different people with very different structures, individuals with different characteristics, but at the same time it is a single species that can experience common happiness, sadness and anxiety. We all have individual experiences and personal opinions, but we also have a collective consciousness.In fact, the word artificial, which means "made by a human being" in Turkish, comes from the root of artificial art in English. Humanity has experienced revolutionary leaps throughout history. The discovery of fire and writing, the invention of electricity and the internet, and now artificial intelligence, one of the most important issues of our age.

A is A and A cannot be B. The object-subject relationship is one of the most important debates in the philosophy of mind today. Yes, artificial intelligence can perceive the blue colour of the wall. It can even describe it much better than a human. It can tell us what shade of blue it is, when the wall was painted and even by whom, but it cannot know what blue means. But blue can make each person feel something different. For example, while it reminds me of the ocean, it may remind someone else of his childhood or someone else of the sky. People only know what they discover. Since artificial intelligence is human-based, I think it will not be possible for artificial intelligence to find the unknown.

In other words, what makes a person human, what makes a person an individual, will not be in artificial intelligence. First-person experience and the fact that the same things evoke different things in different people, that is, subjective inner experience, are features that artificial intelligence cannot complete.

In addition, human characteristics such as the gender factor, genetic characteristics, the experience of quantum unknowability, the consequences of birth and death, and the endeavour to continue one's own generation are also things that cannot be in artificial intelligence. Acting like a human being does not mean realising the purpose of being human.When I look in the mirror or talk to myself, who is the other me? Will artificial intelligence experience this paradox?

Language is the most effective communication element that distinguishes humans from other living things. Language is a miracle in itself. It is certain that language affects our emotions and our emotions affect language. Poetry is one of the most special uses of language. Whether a work is a poem or not is felt before it is understood. Elements such as transposed sentences, inversions, polysemy, metaphors, irony, rhymes, word games, musical elements of poetry, creating new language elements require a lot of effort for a poet, but artificial intelligence can do them faster than a human poet.

So can artificial intelligence create a work of art? Image, style, form and meaning, artist and audience are the most defining characteristics of a work of art.We ask artificial intelligence to write a poem and it does, but is artificial intelligence aware of the poem it writes? Does it know the consequences of awareness?Does the poem it writes have a purpose or not? Is it a poet or a construct that is asked to be a poet?

Moreover, science has no moral structure. The creation of a work of art is a purely individual endeavour. As a poet, sometimes I find such a sentence that its sequence is perfect, it is very impressive in terms of sound, wordplay and rhyme, but it is something I do not want in terms of meaning. I delete that sentence reluctantly. I do not think artificial intelligence will have this sensitivity.

Despite all my criticisms that artificial intelligence cannot have human characteristics, I think that artificial intelligence will be able to produce works of art in the coming years. This will take some time. The fact that artificial intelligence behaves like a human being without knowing how to be human requires a semantic syntax distinction as in the "Chinese Room Argument". Because semantics does not emerge from syntax.When such obstacles are overcome, artificial intelligence will analyse all poems in a short period of time and create a brand new style of poetry. Poems can also become an aesthetic product over time. An artificial intelligence that produces very beautiful works will emerge.Therefore, we poets need to hurry up to write beautiful poems.

 

But I don't think artificial intelligence will realise that it writes poetry, the reasons and consequences of it, what it means to be a poet. But does it matter? We can evaluate a work of art independently of its author. If the work has reached an aesthetic expression and has succeeded in influencing the society, I think there is nothing wrong with it and I enjoy that work of art because in a way, the work of art belongs to society and art and it does not matter who made or wrote it.

However, the following question arises here. Should the work of art belong to artificial intelligence or to the human being who created it? Even if artificial intelligence is everything, it will never be a human being. In other words, since the artificial intelligence that performs a work will exist because it is a human being who creates it, the work it creates will actually be a human work. In conclusion, I would like to say that art has no escape from human beings.
