The film offers a reflective portrayal of independent reading and bookselling through human stories, focusing on İsmail Kün, who has worked as a bookseller in Tarsus for twenty‑five years. It explores bookselling and the contemporary equivalent of the independent bookstore in the context of changing times and the pursuit of modernity and multimedia. It examines the city’s dynamics and the mission of a shop where the book remains at the center — a cultural island striving to flourish. With a touch of nostalgia, it tells the story of a bookstore that has preserved its original and authentic character despite modern trends. The film is also a discussion about the relationships and contemporary role of independent reading, independent publishers, and bookstores.
The 40‑minute documentary The Bookstore was produced in 2022 with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey, the General Directorate of Cinema and Culture, as well as DocMonde and EurasiaDoc.

Nazlı Berivan Ak was born in 1982 in Ankara, Turkey. She completed her studies at the Faculty of Language, History and Geography at Ankara University, in the Department of Ancient Languages and Cultures, specializing in Classical Philology. She earned her master’s degree in Latin and Ancient Greek, and later completed her PhD at the Faculty of Theology, Department of History of Religions.
Since 2009, she has been working as an editor and copyright manager at the renowned publishing house April Publishing, while also contributing as an expert, journalist, and editor for various newspapers and magazines. She is recognized as a specialist in international book fairs, independent bookstores, and industry‑related issues. In her daily work, she represents the publishing house at fairs and international events, seeking promising authors and new literary voices.
In 2024, Netflix released a series titled Kübra, based on the novel of the same name by Afşin Kum, originally published by April Publishing. She has edited several notable works, including The Vegetarian by Han Kang, the current Nobel Prize laureate.
She is also passionate about documentary filmmaking, and one of her most significant achievements is the creation of the documentary film Kitapçı (The Bookseller).

At the Public Library in Sanok, another screening of the film “Kitapçı” directed by Nazlı Berivan Ak was held. The event was hosted by Kamil Krowicki. The film was met with great warmth and emotion, and it even inspired a personal reflection from the Library Director. After the screening, over wine and delicious regional specialties, we discussed the challenges of contemporary readership and the situation of independent publishers.
